Tiltil: Clima
Chile, long and thin, is a geographically diverse country with a wide range of climate. From the hyper-arid climate of the Atacama Desert in the north to the temperate oceanic climate in the south. The central region of Chile, where Tiltil is located, is generally characterized by a Mediterranean climate, with summer drought and winter rainfall.
But even Tiltil–at just 650km2, but spanning 1800m in elevation–is characterized by three distinct climate zones.
- Warm-summer Mediterranean climate in high elevation Csb (h): Located at elevated areas in the west, temperatures are cooler, and there is more variability in precipitation.
- Warm-summer Mediterranean climate - Csb: In the lower altitudes of central Tiltil, this climate features hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters.
- Cold semi‑arid steppe climate - BSk (s): Semiarid climate with winter rainfall: Predominantly in the transitional areas in the east where Huertos Familares is located, this climate has low annual precipitation and hot, arid summers.
With low annual rainfall, and long dry periods, Huertos has a long 8-month summer drought, but in the last 15 years the region has been experiencing unprecedented droughts, sometimes up to 10-months.
The rain shadow effect plays a crucial role in shaping the climate of Tiltil. A rain shadow occurs when moist air from the ocean is forced to rise over a mountain range. As the air ascends, it cools and releases moisture in the form of rain or snow on the windward side of the mountains. By the time the air reaches the leeward side, it has lost most of its moisture, resulting in significantly reduced rainfall and a drier climate. Tiltil, situated in the Chacabuco Valley, is located on the leeward side of the Chilean Coastal Range (Cordillera de la Costa). The Coastal Range acts as a natural barrier, blocking much of the moisture from the Pacific Ocean. As a result, low annual rainfall, long dry periods, and frequent droughts.
